How to Proceed

Chemicals harm people’s brains

Alcohol, drinking liquor, even wine and beer, takes away judgment and a little more can cause stupor, coma and death.  Practically everyone knows first hand or from a relative or friend, alcohol’s toxic effects but may not realize that over 100 other chemicals harm human brains.  Many cause permanent ill effects from one exposure.  Dr. Kilburn measures these effects with 24 tests of brain function.  Molds growing indoors are the “new” cause of extreme fatigue, impaired memory, concentration and balance.  People associated premature losses and new mental impairment with musty, often acrid, odors indoors with high humidity.  Measured efficiencies of balance, reaction, recall, vision and trouble multitasking suggest mold exposures.  Industrial hygienists demonstrate and grow mold.  Mold toxins can be detected in building materials and indoor air.

People consult Dr. Kilburn about their impaired brain function and to determine whether their children have brain damage after finding possible chemical triggers of insidious losses of ability.

They come because family doctors have not made sense of symptoms of being forgetful, fatigued, befuddled, lost in familiar places, unable to remember even when they put the list of jobs or even trouble walking or balancing.

Or they were told it is all in your head implying, see a psychiatrist.  Some took that step but got no help.

To proceed, consider the possibility that your brain has aged, too swiftly.

  • Then consider an environmental cause at work? Describe your job when exposed. To what chemicals were you exposed? Did you smell the pungent odor of chlorine? What processes were being used? What were you making?

  • At home? Did you see or smell mold? Did you smell rotten egg gas? How could chemical exposures to insecticides, cleaning agents, paints and odors have hurt you?

  • Did you experience burning of eyes nose or throat, tears, cough, headache, fatigue and nausea?
  • What happened in the next days?
  • How did to being away for a weekend or more affect your symptoms?
  • What effects came later?
  • How much better did you get and at what interval after being exposed?

Second, what can be measured to confirm premature aging of the brain?

  • The brain’s diverse functions can be measured with  a dozen simple test functions that people usually take for granted, to see if it is aging prematurely.
  • One determines how well you balance.
  • Another, how fast is your reaction time?
  • How well do you discriminate colors?
  • Do your visual field maps show blind spots, narrowing or constriction?
  • Is blink reflex latency time prolonged?
  • Is grip strength decreased?
  • Do you have hearing loss?
  • A second dozen mental function tests measure:
  1. The speed and accuracy of problem solving ability using 46 designs,
  2. Vocabulary,
  3. Speed of digit-symbol substitution,
  4. Placing pegs in a pegboard,
  5. Making trails connecting numbers and
  6. Numbers alternating with letters,
  7. Recognizing numbers written on finger tips,
  8. Recall memory of 2 stories,
  9. Delayed recall,
  10. through 12. Three long term memory tests

These tests are explained in detail in the testing methods section.

Third, call us to learn more and arrange testing.

  • Testing is done by appointment in Pasadena, CA in a comfortable suite in a garden.  Hotels and motels are nearby.  Tests take 5 hours.  A confidential report is mailed within a week taken into account the pattern, the chemical agent, or agents and considers other possible explanations in deferential diagnosis.  Thus it is a “best fit” analysis. It can be used for medical and legal purposes as well as demonstration of disability.
  • The cost is $1,575 to be paid at the time of testing. We will provide you with a statement for you to bill your insurance company.
  • Contact us to arrange an evaluation.
