A patient who made prosthetic limbs had myoclonic seizures which were
triggered by flashing lights and loud sounds. The seizures were originally
treated with valaproic acid but she has been seizure free for more than two
years off medication. Her independence and performance as mother and swimming
instructor seemed impossible shortly after exposure. In 1988 she had severe
impairment of balance, very poor verbal and visual recall though she scored well
on mental ability tests, block design and Culture Fair, and perceptual motor
function was not slowed. Moods states (POMS score) showed high anger and
depression. In January 1997 she was exposed to Clearseal (a polyurethane
product) being applied to the deck of an indoor swimming pool and had multiple
symptoms with extreme fatigue and intense reactions to many chemicals. During
three weeks she regained her previous well being. Subsequently reaction time,
visual fields, Culture Fair, vocabulary and sway speed with eyes open were
within predicted levels. Only sway with eyes closed was abnormal.
